Winter is Coming

I’ve decided to embrace winter!

Sitting inside. Football on the TV. And outside wet snow is falling. I am begrudgingly saying goodbye to summer. Fall seems painfully short. It won’t be long until the birds are making their way south and the temperatures stay chilly; even cold.

The older I get, the more I value each day. And the more I hope I make it to the next spring. I celebrate each May when I hear the first meadowlark. So now, seeing snow, I prepare for winter…mentally and physically. In the midwest the wintery weather often begins mid-October. Days are shorter and nights longer. I am aware of how the years move in cycles, playing out repeated activities, holidays, and birthdays.

I’ve put my winter survival gear in the car, laid in a supply of toilet paper, and made sure that I have the gas tank full when I head out!

But I’ve decided to embrace winter! Even love winter! I don’t want to waste even one day of my life waiting for spring! I’ll dress warm and enjoy the crisp air. I’ll look forward to watching snowy landscapes on my way to work! There will be hot tea with honey, cider with cinnamon, and jigsaw puzzles by the fire on cold winter nights. I’ll look for tracks in the snow and maybe even risk a broken hip making snow angels! Yes, winter is coming, but it’s full of gifts I don’t want to miss!
